While Pride Month serves as an annual celebration of LGBTQ+ communities, true inclusion should be a daily practice. At Alda, we believe that fostering an inclusive workplace culture starts with respectful communication—and a key part of that is using inclusive language.
Why Pronouns Matter
Respecting gender pronouns is fundamental to creating a safe and welcoming environment. Whether someone uses he/him, she/her, they/them, or other pronouns, addressing individuals correctly is a simple yet powerful way to show respect and acknowledge their identity.
One common misconception is that “they” can only be used as a plural pronoun. In reality, "they" has been used as a singular pronoun for centuries. Recognising and normalising this usage is a small but impactful step towards more inclusive communication.
The Impact of Language on Inclusion
Language shapes how we see and experience the world. Words can either reinforce barriers or break them down, making inclusive language a cornerstone of equity and belonging.
For instance, phrases like "mum and dad" assume a specific family structure, which may not reflect everyone's reality. Using “parent” or “caregiver” ensures that all family dynamics are recognised and respected.
Commit to Inclusion Every Day
Inclusivity isn’t just about policy changes—it’s about daily actions that foster respect, understanding, and belonging. By making conscious choices about our words, we can all help create a more welcoming and supportive workplace.
Let’s celebrate Pride Month and beyond by committing to inclusive language—because every word matters.
