Today, 19th June, we celebrate Women’s Rights Day (Kvennréttindadagurinn), a historic moment in Iceland’s journey towards gender equality. This day marks the anniversary of Icelandic women gaining the right to vote in 1915—a transformative milestone that set the stage for many advancements, including electing the world’s first female president, pioneering progressive gender legislation, and working towards closing the gender pay gap.

As one of the first countries to grant women suffrage, Iceland has long been a global leader in gender equality. However, while we celebrate these achievements, we must also acknowledge that true equality has yet to be fully realised.

Recognising the Work Still to Be Done

Although Iceland is often seen as a beacon of gender equality, the lived experiences of many show that systemic challenges remain. Gender equity must go beyond policies—it requires continuous action to address all forms of inequality across diverse backgrounds and identities.
