General Methodology
Subjective Experience Focus: The survey is designed to measure the subjective experiences of employees. The goal is not to achieve precise, objective measurements but rather to understand personal perceptions and feelings.
Foundation in Qualitative Research: Our methodology is rooted in extensive qualitative research, including hundreds of interviews conducted when we were a consulting company. We aim to quantify these qualitative experiences to better understand and measure them.
Comparative Analysis: The survey allows us to compare experiences across different social groups. This helps identify disparities and work towards enhancing inclusion within the workplace.
Survey Development and Principles
Adherence to Modern Survey Techniques: The survey was developed using contemporary surveying techniques and aligns with best practices in social sciences.
Inclusive Approach: While we adhere to standard surveying methodologies, we intentionally deviate in certain areas to ensure inclusivity. Our questions are designed to be inclusive of everyone, which sometimes requires moving away from typical survey norms.
Types of Questions
Likert Scale Questions: These questions use a scale (e.g., Very well to Very badly) to gauge responses, with an additional option for "I prefer not to disclose" to respect privacy.
Three-Option Scale Questions: Some questions have a three-point scale. Example:
How inclusive or not inclusive do you find your workplace?
An inclusive workplace is one where everyone can fully engage, thrive, and reach their potential, regardless of who they are.
Not inclusive at all
Somewhat inclusive
Fully inclusive
I prefer not to disclose
Multi-select Questions: These allow respondents to select multiple options, providing a more nuanced understanding of their experiences.
We don’t have a skip question option since we want people to partake to the fullest. Participants can, however, choose “I prefer not to disclose”.
This is because it encourages full participation and ensures that all relevant data points are collected. By requiring respondents to answer each question, the survey captures a complete picture of their experiences and opinions, which is crucial for accurate analysis and meaningful insights. This approach helps prevent gaps in data that could skew results or lead to incomplete understanding of the workplace.
Clarity and Understanding
Clear Explanations: We go above and beyond to clearly explain concepts and terms used in the survey. This ensures that all respondents fully understand the questions, promoting consistent and accurate responses.
Importance of Data and Measurement
Quantifying Experiences: By quantifying experiences, we can pinpoint specific issues within the workplace. This data-driven approach helps move conversations from subjective feelings to objective, actionable insights.
Focus on Safety and Anonymity: Ensuring the safety of all participants is paramount. Responses are completely anonymous and untraceable, preventing further marginalisation of already vulnerable groups.
